Diversity

And now, another Fact of Congress
Back in the early days of our country, almost all of our citizens had come from northern Europe.
When a congressman from those days spoke with his constituency, by and large he and they looked pretty much the same and also had many shared values and therefore creating laws that worked for all was a relatively simple matter.
Well, imagine that same congressman today addressing his constituency.
The United States is now a tremendously diverse nation, with people from all over the world becoming citizens.
He wouldn’t know what to do!
This creates a special challenge for today’s members of Congress, as they must govern a population that has vastly different backgrounds and beliefs.
Passing laws that take all of us into consideration requires patience and a willingness to seek out and listen to all of the different voices that make up 21st century America.
